Car & Trailer / Towing Driver Training

Am I legal to tow?

if you passed your test after January 1997, it is now a legal requirement that you hold a licence Category B+E to enable you to tow a trailer exceeding 750kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass), most horse boxes, caravans and some household trailers weigh this unloaded.

I don’t hold that entitlement, what do I do next?

If you need to tow a trailer exceeding 750kg for either private or commercial usage your first step is to check to see if your licence counterpart shows B+E provisional entitlement, if you are unsure please contact us on 01352 714344. Once we can confirm that your licence displays provisional entitlement we can arrange
an assessment drive which will last approximately 1 hour,
to determine the amount of training you will require to reach test standard. Please note our assessment drive fee is £20.

What does the training involve?

Our training covers all areas of towing including on site manoeuvres that consists of reversing, a controlled stop, un-coupling and re-coupling, loading and unloading and safely securing a load. It also includes on road training to develop your driving to a high standard and to fully prepare you for all aspects of towing. All of our quality training is overseen by an Ex LGV Examiner.

What does the car and trailer test involve?

The B+E test is carried out at an LGV driving test centre and is similar to an LGV test. The examiner will assess both you off road manoeuvres and your on road driving ability. For further information please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01352 714344.
